Five folks (including me) attended the session.

We discussed quite a few topics, including:

  • spot removal brush
  • lens correction and perspective correction
  • cropping tool
  • local adjustment tools: linear gradient, radial gradient and adjustment brush
  • collections, including creating smart collections

We explored touching up a face with the local adjustment brush and spot removal in order to eliminate or minimize skin imperfections.

Plan to have folks bring photos to the next session to work on.

Please post comments in this blog on features or issues you want addressed in the next session.

Thanks!!

Some questions from Jim Hagan:

1. Let say I open a RAW file in Lightroom. How do I get it into PhotoShop?

Answer: After selecting the photo you can choose to open it to edit in Photoshop by using the menu commands Photo / Edit In / Edit it in Adobe Photoshop. Alternatively, you can depress Ctrl-E after selecting the photo.

2. When I am working in PhotoShop and am using layers, or whatever, and then close the file as a PSD file are these PhotoShop actions recorded or are they just “memo actions” (or whatever the right term is) which are kept track of in Lightroom? I am guessing that Lightroom keeps track of only the actions taken while using Lightroom but not those taken while using PhotoShop.

Answer: The file is saved as a Photoshop file (either as .PSD or .TIFF, depending on your preference setting) as if you had opened it from Bridge and saved it in Photoshop. The only difference is that Lightroom has processed the RAW file (rather than Adobe Camera Raw) using the adjustments you may have made in Lightroom. The adjustments you made in Photoshop, for example adjustment layers, filters etc., are stored in the PSD or TIFF, but the Photoshop history is not retained in Lightroom. After you save the file the saved PSD or TIFF file is added to your Lightroom catalog and “stacked” with the original RAW file. “Stacking” means the file are associated together in the catalog, but are in fact separate files and can be treated as such.

3. I think you told me last night that, with some exceptions, PhotoShop and Lightroom “talk” with each other and when I take actions in PhotoShop the updated files are also updated by Lightroom. Correct? Do I have to do something to have Lightroom update its files for PhtoShop activities.

Answer: Lightroom and Photoshop interact as I describe in the last answer. You do not need to do anything special to make this happen.

4. How do I enter my present 10,000 photos into Lightroom.

Answer: There is an “import” function in Lightroom. Menu: File / Import Photos and Videos. This function has many options, but you would want to add your existing pictures into the Lightroom by “adding” them rather than “copying” them so the files will not be duplicated. This is a topic that we can explore as a group discussion.
